This is a time of unprecedented innovation - from radical designs for sustainable cities, to clever new financing models, to revolutionary new technologies like blockchain and AI. But a spectre looms - a question about whether climate change is being adequately addressed. Is it too late to prevent climate disaster at all? It feels a bit like a fascist regime, that no-one took seriously enough, suddenly has the potential to overwhelm us rendering our innovations and our ambitions redundant. These questions cause us to agonise over our children's future. As the climate change-threat question comes increasingly into focus, everything might change for all of us. How sustainability and conservation financing - from individuals, philanthropists, private sector or governments - should now be invested? is a question that should be asked.
What is Cascade?

"Cascade" describes the successive and amplified impact of "Transition Tokens" designed to bring a sure-fire fight to Climate Change. A Transition Token is a token issued by a blockchain that represents verified and validated valuable transition.

The first of these tokens already exists; it is called Swytch, and it came out of thinking from MIT and Cambridge University (though there are many other thought-leaders):

  1. Swytch's technology stack includes an "oracle" that collects data from renewable energy producers using existing smart meter technology.

  2. Swytch tokens are minted on the Ethereum blockchain and transferred to energy producers against this verified and validated data in measure with the carbon displaced by the clean energy produced.

  3. The resulting new data commons delivers "collective knowledge" that supports a shift to an energy ecosystem aligned with future energy needs rather than at odds with it.

  4. Trust in the data from the device itself allows a decentralized energy grid with a distributed model around governance, identity, and optimization. (The alternative is that all information coming from devices is siloed with the corresponding loss of potential collective intelligence. A tragedy of the commons ensues - hoarding, falsely treating power of any form as an unlimited resource, and inherent points of failure and other vulnerabilities within a critical human infrastructure).

Similar tokenomic interventions are viable and feasible for other transitions such as:

  • Petrol and diesel transport to low emission cars and other forms of transport;

  • Changing land use to achieve low-emission results, and;

  • Accelerated restoration of degraded land globally (reforestation).

The Cascade describes how this solution will catch hold until enough mechanisms that conclusively address Climate Change are installed. The Blueprints Report is a detailed explanation of each mechanism including what needs to be done to make each one happen.
